Are you sure? Are you using NoScript or some other script blocker in your browser(s)? If you aren't then you're still feeding google all kinds of information. There are very few websites nowadays that don't have at least two to four google scripts trying to be run. Shoot, even here, there are at least two google scripts trying to run. If you're using NoScript you can make sure they don't run.

Question about installing Firefox ESR: Should I just install it alongside my standard version of Firefox and then import cookies etc or should I put those on a thumb drive and uninstall Firefox before installing ESR?

You can put them on a thumb drive and you can also set up a sync account with them and it will restore all of your settings from that.

I uninstalled the consumer version first before installing ESR.

Kind of. From what I've noticed, there are two youtube scripts being run on most sites. The main one "youtube.com" can't track you if it can't run. But if you find one of their vids you want to see, then click on "temporarily allow youtube.com" and let the screen refresh. Then, depending on how you configure things, another youtube script will be called up. From what I've noticed, that script only shows up after you allow the youtube.com script. So I've permanently allowed that second script. If I find that second script running all by itself somewhere then I'll disallow it.

So, once you allow those two scripts you can watch any youtube video. Just remember to disallow them once your done and never allow the main youtube.com script permanent access.

I installed NoScript. Youtube vids don't work on PS now; even when I enabled everything. What am I missing?

I will say NoScript puts image hosts in their place! No more problems (famous last words) with hijack host ads.

How can I learn custom settings for NoScript?

First, I should say that NoScript can break some sites. Not a lot but they're out there. But youtube isn't one of them as I go there quite often.

Just FYI, when I do run into a site NoScript breaks (and I really want to go there) I copy the URL to the clipboard and then open a second browser (with little or no security), paste the URL into that browser and go straight to that site. I've yet to have this procedure fail but it is dangerous so make sure you really want to see whats on that site.

On to your questions.

Which browser are you using? You mention PS but I'm not sure what that is (the only PS I know is Photo Shop).

Let me get back to you on the youtube scripts so I can give you a clearer explanation.

Also, what are your cookie settings? If you set them too strict that will nowadays break a site also. I'm using Pale Moon and don't allow any cookies except for sites I know and trust (because I've been going there for a while). For those sites I go to Exceptions and paste the base URL in and then only allow them for session.

The image ad blocking is really nice.

As far as learning, start at the NoScript website. And I'm sure there are forums out there devoted to learning NoScript (but I've never used them). I've just learned by using and playing. Especially at sites I visite often. You'll have to learn which scripts to allow. And that will depend on how much you value your privacy.

A good example is google. There are almost no sites anymore that don't have at least one google script trying to be run. But in reality they usually don't have to be run except on certain sites. Such as most any of these sites where you download a video. With almost all of those you must allow the google.com script which then calls up another which is the human checker (don't know what they call these). They make you input something and then wait for some time.

Enough for now. Will get back to you shortly about the youtube question.

OK, just double checked and I was able to run youtube videos. Here is what I did.

Using NoScript and Youtube

Started Pale Moon, changed to the youtube search engine in the search box and then typed the name of a band I listen to in the search box. The youtube page showing the findings then appeared. There were two notices at the top of the page.

The first said they will stop supporting this browser soon (in March I believe) but don’t really know how much this will affect me. The second was that I had Javascript disabled (which, of course I do using NoScript). Then checked the NoScript bar which showed the youtube.com script wasn’t allowed and was the only script on the main page trying to be run. Then checked the “Recently Blocked Sites” option. Only google.com was in there not being run. The gstatic.com was not called up yet. If you click on any of the videos at this point none of them will run.

So I clicked on “temporarily allow youtube.com” and then clicked on the first available video. It ran. Clicked on two or three videos and they all ran.

Then clicked on the NoScript button again to see what had changed. The google.com script was now in the first screen and asking to be run. But it was not running yet. So you don’t need to allow the google.com script to run for now (that may change). But the googlevideo.com script was running. So thats the script which, so far, I’ve only seen at youtube and is called up by the youtube.com script.

So why don’t you try temporarily allowing the youtube.com and googlevideo.com scripts to see if youtube now works? Let me know what happens.

Good luck!

Well, it's been a week since I got a divorce from Firefox, due to irreconcilable differences...
